Gabriela Lizbeth Cristerna Díaz: "Carnavalera" to the bone

Gabriela Lizbeth Cristerna Díaz knows what Mazatlan Carnaval is like, and this year she is facing one of her greatest experiences: to try to become Queen of the 120th edition of the maximum festival that has as its motto as: "Patasalada, the Circus of the Talents".

At 21, Gabriela is in the fourth year of a Bachelors in Nutrition and since she was little, dancing has been one of her greatest pleasures and, literally, she has allowed herself to be part of the maximum fiesta of the port while participating in the Infantile Dance, to compete in dance troupes during the parade and be part of the dance corps in the coronations.

"The truth is a very big commitment and it is something very tiring, but it leaves me with a very nice feeling because I am Mazatlecan, because I love my port and I am very proud. There were rehearsals that ended at 5:00 in the morning and of course it is tiring, you are all sleepless but you are very nice; Like the parades are long, but to see the joy of people and children, feel the fiesta and represent the culture of Mazatlan, I like it a lot. "

Now Gabriela decided to know how a candidate for Queen lives; how she suffers, enjoys and what challenges there are for a woman who aspires to represent the traditions and values of a centennial party: the rewards have been great.

"It has been a very nice experience. I have met people who come, support, offer you things and most importantly, you discover yourself: I used to say that I was very insecure and you see what you are capable of achieving, it is a personal challenge ".

Due to the growth of the port in recent years, Gabriela Lizbeth Cristerna Díaz believes that the time has come to project, as never before, the enormous cultural richness of the port´s greatest festival.

"I think international advertising is necessary, especially our cultural attractions, the tradition and history of Carnaval. There´s a lot that people that should know: how everything started with the Flour Festivals, the time of the cork, that before there were contests for the queens, when husks were given, all the evolution that the fiesta has had throughout time".

Gabriela hopes to have another good experience on the night of the Queen’s: to know what a Mazatlan woman feels when she becomes the sovereign of the Carnaval Internacional Mazatlan.

"I imagine a very emotional moment, full of illusions; of courage, of strength, because it has cost me, because it is a sacrifice to be here. I want to express that, that nothing stops me and to show people, and myself, what I am capable, and fulfill this dream ".
