Hace ya tres años que la soprano Jéssika Arévalo –oriunda de Guatemala- partió de Mazatlán a la Ciudad de México. Y ahora que su carrera profesional despega, vuelve a la tierra que la vio nacer como artista para participar en la ópera “Carmen”, una super producción del Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlán.
Como en la música, las pasiones humanas explotan en los personajes. Uno de ellos es “Frasquita”, la joven gitana que interpretará Jéssika.
“’Frasquita’ es un personaje bastante divertido, es una mujer muy alegre y estábamos platicando con el director de escena que, por la tesitura y por las cosas que escribió Bizet para ella, imaginamos que es la más joven de las tres. Son tres mujeres muy poderosas y muy independientes: ‘Frasquita’, ‘Mercedes’ y Carmen’, pero obviamente ‘Carmen’ es el ejemplo, el mayor referente de todas, lo que quieren llegar a ser; porque consigue todo lo que quiere”.
Es así, con el trazo precioso que el compositor francés dio a sus personajes, que para Jéssika Arévalo, “Carmen” es una cita ineludible para todos los que aman acercarse a lo más profundo de la condición humana.
“Yo creo que todas las personas, en algún momento, se han sentido identificadas con los personajes de ‘Carmen’, a lo mejor no exactamente como los pinta Bizet, pero sí en las aspiraciones y deseos: llegar a ser esa gitana que con una sola mirada puede tener la atención de todos los hombres, o llegar a un lugar y ser el centro de atención, o tener la libertad que tienen ‘Frasquita’, ‘Mercedes’, ‘Dancaire’ y ‘El Remendado’ de andar por la vida buscando dinero y haciendo las cosas que les gustan y tener una recompensa por esto”.
Sobre el proyecto operístico del puerto Jéssika Arévalo comenta: “Mazatlán para mí es el lugar en donde se abrieron muchas puertas. Yo soy de Guatemala, vengo de un país que, aunque estemos pegaditos, es totalmente diferente. Entonces llegué acá, a los brazos del maestro (Enrique) Patrón, y creo que no pude tener mejor comienzo que bajo su guía y la de la maestra Martha Félix. Regresar para mí conlleva mucha nostalgia y mucha alegría por saber que todavía sigo siendo querida en el terruño que me vio nacer como artista”.
A casi 150 años de su estreno “Carmen” ha trascendido el ámbito operístico y forma parte de la cultura popular. Para la guatemalteca esto radica en dos aspectos: su magnificencia, que con más de 100 artistas en escena, (sin contar a los instrumentistas de la Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de las Artes), cuadros de baile flamenco y una gran escenografía expone porqué la ópera es el arte total por excelencia; y, sobretodo, su música.
“Es tan española, tan fuerte y romántica al mismo tiempo, porque es música francesa (escrita por un compositor francés). Es verdaderamente, sobre todo hacia nosotros los latinos, muy fuerte, muy pasional”.
“Carmen” se presentará este 23 y 24 de noviembre en el Teatro Ángela Peralta a las 20:00 horas. Los boletos tienen un costo de 100, 250,400, 500,600. Disponibles en taquilla y en La Gran Plaza.

Jéssika Árevalo returns to Mazatlán to play "Frasquita"
It has been three years since the soprano Jéssika Arévalo - from Guatemala - left Mazatlán for Mexico City, and now that her professional career has taken off, she returns to the land that saw her bloom as an artist participating in the opera "Carmen", a super production of the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlan.
As in music, human passions explode in the characters. One of them is "Frasquita", the young gypsy woman that Jéssika will play.
"´Frasquita´ is a very funny character, she is a very happy woman and we were talking with the stage director who, because of the situation and the things that Bizet wrote for her, we imagine that she is the youngest of the three. They are three very powerful and very independent women: ´Frasquita´, ´Mercedes´ and Carmen´, but obviously ´Carmen´ is the example, the greatest reference of all, what they want to be; because she gets everything she wants. "
It is thus, with the precious stroke that the French composer gave to his characters, that for Jéssika Arévalo, "Carmen" is an unmissable event for all those who love to approach the depths of the human condition.
"I think that everyone, at some point, has identified with the characters of ´Carmen´, maybe not exactly as Bizet paints them, but in their aspirations and desires: to become that gypsy with a single glance can have the attention of all men, or get to a place and be the center of attention, or have the freedom that ´Frasquita´, ´Mercedes´, ´Dancaire´ and ´El Mendez´ have to walk through life looking for money and doing the things that they like and be rewarded for it."
On the operatic project of the port, Jéssika Arévalo comments: "Mazatlán for me is the place where many doors were opened. I am from Guatemala, I come from a country that, although we are similar, it’s totally different. Then I arrived here, in the arms of maestro (Enrique) Patrón, and I think I could not have had a better start than under his guidance and that of maestra Martha Félix. Returning, to me, brings a lot of nostalgia and great joy in knowing that I am still loved in the homeland that saw me bloom as an artist ".
Almost 150 years after its premiere, "Carmen" has transcended the operatic sphere and is part of popular culture. For the Guatemalan, this lies in two aspects: its magnificence, which with more than 100 artists on stage, (without counting the instrumentalists of the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra of the Arts), flamenco dance paintings and a great set design, exposes why the opera is the total art par excellence; and, above all, its music.
"It´s so Spanish, so strong and romantic at the same time, because of its French music (written by a French composer). It is truly, especially for us Latinos, very strong, very passionate. "
"Carmen" will be presented this November 23 and 24 at the Angela Peralta Theater at 8:00 p.m. The tickets have a cost of $100, 250,400, 500, 600 pesos. Available at the box office of the theater and in the Gran Plaza.
