Julio Recinos, organizador del Jazz Fest Chilo y Alfredo Gómez Rubio, presidente de Proyecto Centro Histórico A.C (la institución que, junto al Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlán, promueve y gestiona el festival) subieron al escenario para hablar de la trayectoria de Gilberto “Flaco” Valenzuela, quien en las décadas de los 60 y 70 tocó en una agrupación en el Bar “El Navegante” del Hotel Cima, uno de los sitios más emblemáticos del jazz en la historia del puerto.

Posteriormente el homenajeado agradeció a los organizadores por rescatar a los jazzistas locales que, en su momento, entregaron tanto a la escena musical y se congratuló por el trabajo de la Escuela de Música de Cultura que ha formado a  jóvenes valores del jazz porteño.  

Después de este emotivo momento Recinos y Gómez Rubio hicieron la declaratoria inaugural del Mazatlán Jazz Fest Chilo 2018 y llamaron a escena al Pablo Prieto Quartet que inició  su show “Impressions of Dave Brubeck” como un auténtico torbellino con el tema “Mr. Broadway”.

De principio a fin, los músicos demostraron gran energía y, sobre todo, un enorme respeto y pasión hacia la música de Dave Brubeck, compositor que vio en el jazz un panorama amplio para plasmar su espíritu de creador inquieto y fecundo.

La vasta imaginación del pianista Alex Mercado, el excepcional manejo del ritmo del baterista Pablo Prieto, las vigorosas ejecuciones del contrabajista Emiliano Coronel y la potencia del saxofonista Federico Hülsz permitieron que las diversas facetas de Brubeck emocionaran, conmovieran y fascinaran al público porteño: temas de gran sutileza y elegancia, momentos de arrebato y vértigo, atmósferas plagadas de serenidad y reverencia inspiradas en la cultura japonesa.

El público agradeció en todo momento a los músicos con sus aplausos, ya fuera en las breves pausas en las que Pablo Prieto daba información sobre la vida y obra de Dave Brubeck, o después de los grandes solos e improvisaciones que estos excepcionales jazzistas mexicanos le entregaron al público porteño en este primer concierto del Mazatlán Jazz Fest Chilo 2018.

Este viernes continúa el Jazz Fest Chilo 2018 con el grupo jalisciense Kingsmith, que ofrecerá un concierto gratuito en el Hector´s Bistro Roof Garden, a partir de las 20:00 horas.

Cuarteto Pablo Prieto inaugurated the Mazatlan Jazz Fest Chilo 2018

The fifth edition of the Mazatlan Jazz Fest Chilo was formally inaugurated at the Ángela Peralta Theater with the concert by the Pablo Prieto Cuarteto and the awarding of the Chilo Morán recognition to the Sinaloa bassist Gilberto "El Flaco" Valenzuela Constanzo.

Julio Recinos, organizer of Jazz Fest Chilo and Alfredo Gómez Rubio, president of Proyecto Centro Histórico AC (the institution that, together with the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlán, promotes and manages the festival) took the stage to talk about Gilberto "Flaco "Valenzuela´s career, who in the 60s and 70s played in a group in the Bar "El Navegante" in Hotel Cima, one of the most emblematic jazz sites in the history of the port.

Later, the honoree thanked the organizers for rescuing the local jazz players who, in turn, gave so much to the music scene and congratulated the work of the School of Music of Cultura that has trained young jazz musicians of Mazatlan.

After this emotional moment, Recinos and Gómez Rubio made the opening statement of Mazatlan Jazz Fest Chilo 2018 and called the Pablo Prieto Quartet to the stage, starting their show "Impressions of Dave Brubeck" as a veritable whirlwind with the theme "Mr. Broadway".

From start to finish, the musicians showed great energy and, above all, an enormous respect and passion for the music of Dave Brubeck, a composer who saw in jazz a broad panorama to express his spirit, a restless and fertile creator.

The vast imagination of pianist Alex Mercado, the exceptional handling of the rhythm of the drummer Pablo Prieto, the vigorous performances of the bassist Emiliano Coronel and the power of the saxophonist Federico Hülsz allowed the various facets of Brubeck to excite, move and fascinate the Maztlan public: great subtlety and elegance, moments of rapture and vertigo, atmospheres plagued with serenity and reverence inspired by the Japanese culture.

The public thanked the musicians contuously with applause, whether at the breaks in which Pablo Prieto gave information about the life and work of Dave Brubeck, or after the great solos and improvisations that these exceptional Mexican jazz players delivered to the Mazatlecan public in this first concert of the Mazatlan Jazz Fest Chilo 2018.

This Friday, Jazz Fest Chilo continues with the group Kingsmith, from Jalisco who will offer a free concert at the Hector´s Bistro Roof Garden, starting at 8:00 p.m.
