Zoila Fernández: Twenty years of experience with "The Nutcracker"

With the Christmas holidays getting closer, the traditional ballet "El Cascanueces" (the Nutcracker), starring the Municipal School of Classical Ballet of Mazatlan, will be presented on the stage of the Angela Peralta Theater this Friday the 1st, at 8:00 pm; and on Saturday, December 2 at 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The director of the school of ballet, Zoila Fernandez, has directed this fantastic piece choreographed by Marius Petipa of Russia, and with the immortal music of Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky for twenty years.

Live music with the Camerata Mazatlán and the Children´s Choir of Cultura, changes in choreography, set design and costumes; more dancers on stage, 112 elementary and middle school students, 12 star dancers that include members of the Mazatlan Dance Company, the participation of maestras Edelys Bernal and Ana Paola Villegas, and the design of a more solid concept for the entire family, make "El Cascanueces" one of the most spectacular events of the Mazatlan Cultural Festival 2017.

Maestra Zoila expresses that this work is ideal for children, young people and adults, because it is a Christmas story full of magic and impressive classic scenes.

"The Pas de Deux, I love it because the music, for me, is one of the most beautiful within the work, every time I see it my heart bristles; Another part that fascinates me is seeing the duo between ´Clarita´ and ´Cascanueces´ when she wakes up from the dream, it´s a very emotional part, "said the Cuban artist.

This year, the implementation of new props and choreographies with greater technical difficulty will be the strong point of the presentations that, of course, will preserve the essence of this classic.

"I have a special affection for it, it is a work that I wait for every year because it is a commitment of mine for the school and the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlan, but also for the city, parents and children who yearn to be in ´The Nutcracker´ because they are changing roles. For them it is a stimulus and for me, as a teacher, developing love for this vocation is very important, "shared Zoila Fernández.
